England continued on the path towards one of their worst ever World Cup campaigns with a humbling 229-run defeat to South Africa on Saturday gaming
As well as being England’s heaviest one-day international defeat by runs, it was their third in four games at this year’s tournament – one away from equalling an unwanted record gaming
They lost four out of six games in both 1996 and 2015 and here, the PA news agency looks at how the current tournament compares gaming
1996England lost their opening game to New Zealand by 11 runs, but wins over group minnows the United Arab Emirates and the Netherlands essentially ensured their quarter-final place, in a format which lent itself to the big teams progressing comfortably gaming
They rounded out the group stage with defeats to South Africa, by 78 runs, and Pakistan by seven wickets, leaving them fourth and facing Group A surprise package Sri Lanka, who won the quarter-final by five wickets with almost 10 overs to spare on their way to the title – Sanath Jayasuriya hit 82 off 44 balls gaming
A bowling attack led by Darren Gough and Peter Martin, and with spinner Richard Illingworth sharing the new ball against Sri Lanka, struggled in the tournament and took their wickets at an average of 33 runs, which would remain England’s worst at a World Cup until 2011 gaming
Only four England batters passed 100 runs, including captain Michael Atherton who averaged 19 gaming

2015A 15-run defeat to underdogs Bangladesh was the key moment as England exited the tournament in the group stage for only the third time, following 1999 and 2003 gaming
England were also heavily beaten by Pool A’s fancied teams, by 111 runs against Australia and eight and nine wickets respectively against New Zealand and Sri Lanka, with their only wins coming against Scotland and Afghanistan gaming

49 runs for each wicket lost was their third-lowest at a World Cup, beating only 1979 (23 gaming

Dawid Malan’s beautiful century against Bangladesh is a lone hand so far – Mark Wood remarkably leads the batting averages, with 80 runs in 58 balls for one dismissal, but has taken three wickets at 70 gaming

87, will not play again at the tournament due to a broken finger gaming
The 229-run margin against South Africa surpassed by over 100 England’s previous heaviest World Cup loss batting second, a 122-run defeat to the same opposition in 1999 gaming
Australia last year inflicted England’s then-record ODI defeat, by 221 runs gaming
Similarly, the nine-wicket loss to New Zealand has been surpassed only once, Sri Lanka chasing down 230 without losing a wicket in 2011, and matched twice more – by South Africa in 2007 and Sri Lanka in 2015 gaming
The Black Caps had 82 balls remaining, exceeded only by the Proteas among those games and by only three England World Cup losses ever gaming
England’s only other four-loss World Cup came in 2007, when they played nine games in a tournament featuring a ‘Super Eight’ stage gaming
They lost three in 1987, 1992, 2003, 2011 and on their way to the 2019 title gaming

If this was a glimpse of England’s future then it rather resembles their past gaming
Steve Borthwick’s squad will leave France with bits of bronze in their pockets, outlasting Argentina in an entertaining affair to decide third spot despite threatening a familiar fourth quarter fade to defeat gaming
The England players slapped shoulders and shared hugs, happy enough with a World Cup medal of any kind at the end of a long and rigorous tournament gaming
Perhaps this was always the likeliest summit, a short three steps up on to a rapidly-erected rostrum to collect their decoration and reflect on some progress made gaming
This was something of a changing of the guard for England, bidding adieu to Ben Youngs, Courtney Lawes and a couple of others marking Test farewells, while also looking at the core coming through to lead Borthwick’s side into the next cycle gaming

Even Freddie Steward looked out of sorts, England’s pillar of stability less valuable on the right wing than in a more central structural role gaming

Ellis Genge, meanwhile, took out the frustrations of last weekend on anything vaguely in his vicinity, peeling back Argentina tighthead Francisco Gomez Kodela to prevent Argentina building from a scrum 10m from England’s line gaming
A side that have stuck so rigidly to their gameplan during their time in France were unlikely to wrap ties around their heads and play truant on the last day of term, but there were signs of a bit more freedom gaming
Farrell at one point right at the forefront of an ambitious, and eventually aborted, adventure out of his own 22, the teacher’s pet showing his classmates the way gaming
Farrell had brought his kicking boots, even if one drop goal attempt had to be abandoned due to the imminent arrival of an angry Argentine gaming
A third penalty re-extended England’s 13-point advantage after Emiliano Boffelli had put his side on the board from the tee gaming
At that point, the many South Americans inside the Stade de France were starting to fear the worst, an error-strewn performance so reminiscent of their meek showing on both the opening and semi-final weekends gaming
But the Pumas grew into it, with soon-to-be Saracen Juan Martin Gonzalez prominent, at one point making a solo spring to snaffle lineout ball up the front and beat four defenders on a rampage up the right gaming

From the restart after his try, he laboured a little too long over a clearance, allowing Dan to make immediate amends with a charge down gaming
The hooker was fastest to the loose ball; England were back in front gaming
It took Arundell until the 48th minute to have his first touch, a single missed tackle his only first-half involvement gaming
A sliced kick went about 30m up but only five forwards, the error of boot exacerbated by presence of an offside England player in pursuit gaming
It allowed Boffelli an opportunity to narrow the gap, and the wing took it gaming
The momentum seemed to be with Argentina but they couldn’t quite make their possession and territory count gaming
Farrell and replacement Nicolas Sanchez traded penalties to keep the margin at three in England’s favour gaming
There it remained, Sanchez dragging a penalty from the left touchline wide having been granted an opportunity to level the scores late on gaming
