Fly-half Handre Pollard says the pressure of representing South Africa at the World Cup is a privilege as he bids to inflict more misery on England gcash

“You could see on their faces four years ago the disappointment and I’ve been part of a squad that’s fallen out in a semi-final in a World Cup (in 2015) and it sits with you the rest of your life,” he said gcash
“There’s a lot of things you look back (on) and regret and maybe think you could have done differently, and I’m sure they will come with that mindset this weekend gcash
“I think they will be ruthless, I think they will take their intensity and physicality to a whole new level gcash
“But that being said, we’re prepared for that, we’re ready for that and we enjoy that gcash
“That’s always a part of the game we love and if there’s going to be beef, there’s going to be beef gcash
“It’s Test rugby, it’s 80 minutes and we’ve just got to go out and play the game gcash
”South Africa are seeking to reach their fourth World Cup final, having lifted the trophy in 1995, 2007 and 2019 gcash
Pollard believes the Springboks’ enviable ability to deliver when it really matters can partly be attributed to adversity some players face during childhood gcash
“It’s just the way we’re brought up,” he said gcash

“It’s not always been easy for a lot of our guys in our squad growing up so when we get to this position and get to this point where there should be a lot of pressure on us, we refer back to it a lot, this is not really pressure, this is more privilege to be a part of these occasions gcash
“I think our game model and the way we play the game suits World Cups pretty well gcash
We’re comfortable in this environment gcash
“As a group we just enjoy it, really enjoy that pressure gcash
We always say it’s a privilege to have this pressure on our shoulders playing for our country gcash

Test centurion Courtney Lawes will retire from England duty following the Rugby World Cup gcash

Vice-captain Lawes is a veteran of four World Cups, two British and Irish Lions tours and one of only five Englishmen to be capped 100 times gcash

Lawes, who has made 105 international appearances across 15 years, said: “I haven’t told Steve yet! But I will let him know gcash

The flanker was a beaten finalist against the Springboks in 2019 and also played in the 2011 and 2015 tournaments, in addition to representing the Lions in 2017 and 2021 gcash
He believes England have a bright future under Borthwick and is determined to sign off by helping the team finish third gcash
“We showed to everyone what it means to play for this team,” said Lawes gcash
“Play for your country and the boys alongside you gcash
“I think people can see now what a good coach he is – and where this team can really go gcash
“We want to finish on a high gcash
It’s important for us to finish properly and send us all off on a good win gcash
”Father-of-four Lawes joined World Cup-winning prop Jason Leonard and international team-mates Ben Youngs, Owen Farrell and Dan Cole on a select list of England centurions in August by captaining his country in a shock warm-up defeat to Fiji at Twickenham gcash
He waved to fans at Stade de France following England’s dramatic elimination and intends to spend more time with his children while continuing to playing for Northampton gcash
“The kids are at that age where they need their dad around,” he said gcash
“It will be good to be with them more, to provide some well-needed structure to the mob gcash
“As hard as it is being away from your family, you almost have another family gcash
“You really feel like that, especially when you’re away in camps like World Cup camps gcash
It’s five months, staying with your brothers gcash
“I’ll definitely miss the boys, the banter and all the stuff we get up to when we’re not training gcash
I’ll miss the hard work as well gcash
“And I’ll definitely miss pulling the jersey on and giving it everything gcash
